Three Wardrobe Personalities
Step inside my closet! Now that it’s (finally) spring, does anyone else feeling like going through their closet? I had the spring cleaning bug one night last weekend, and I found myself in my closet with a glass of wine taking a hard look at my wardrobe, re-evaluating my clothes, organizing and storing away those sweaters I won’t be needing for awhile - let’s hope. It also had me thinking about what I really reach for everyday and how my wardrobe suits my current lifestyle needs.
Lately, with the way my life and career have been going, I feel like I have three distinct roles that I need to dress for that divide my closet: work, fitness + fun!
If you know me, you’ll know that I always keep it pretty basic when it comes to what I wear. I love clothes and dressing well, but I’m also practical and live for pieces that can work for multiple situations and roles in a generally neutral colour palette that’s convertible.
Here’s what I’ll be reaching for this spring in each category:
WORK
No two work days are really the same for me. Working as an associate with the team at Charles Real Estate, I find myself either in the office working on a deal, meeting with a client or running off to showings, so I have to be able to look professional and polished, but it’s so not me to be stuffy or in a suit. Although the real estate biz has definitely become more casual, I still like to look polished but comfortable. My go-to pieces for work this spring will be:
A good old pair of black pants, like these Conan pants or these Lucero pants, both from Aritzia
A simple sleeveless white blouse like this Aiken blouse or a lightweight button up shirt, Gap always has great (and affordable) picks like this one.
In my office or car, I’ll keep a basic black blazer (I have a couple like this one from Zara) and a pair of heels and flats, just in case I need to transition quickly to a more tailored look. You know my love affair with Poppy Barley, their footwear is my go-to favourite. Their products are extremely comfortable! And I can’t forget my black Poppy Barley backpack that fits my laptop and everything I need.
FITNESS
No surprise here, this is probably my favourite portion of my closet. I’m so happy the athleisure trend has stuck around, I love being able to pull on my favourite pair of black tights and a basic tee or tank and go. Plus with two boys, it’s nice to be ready to play with them or get messy making dinner and not worry about what I have on.
Even with my fitness wear, I tend to stick to black, white and grey (boring, I know) but that way no matter what I grab it all goes together. I can run to spin class or bootcamp, then throw on my trusty leather jacket or a bomber overtop and grab coffee or groceries without looking too dishevelled.
My go-to athleisure faves:
lululemon is my go-to for good tights. You can never go wrong with a pair of Wunder Under hi-rise tights, and I’m eyeing a stylish but sporty jacket like this Deep Inhale for breezier spring days when we take Aspen out for a walk.
I love a cool pair of Nikes to throw on to pull my athleisure look together. For spring and summer, I’m definitely looking to add a more lightweight, knit pair of Nike Air Max Theas to the mix. What do you think of these cool nude + gold kicks?
FUN
Now for the fun part: I keep a smaller section of my wardrobe reserved for pieces that are just for date nights, girls weekends, Stampede parties and anything in between where I get to dress up a bit. This is the area of my closet that I get to play with a bit, and although I’m not a big shopper, I’ll usually buy a few new seasonal or on-trend pieces each spring and summer. Here’s what I’m considering for this season:
I always make sure I have few good maxi dresses for the spring and summer. I live in these, they’re so easy to throw on for a BBQ or birthday party with the kids, or when we go to the Okanagan they’re comfortable and cute for a wine tasting. I’ll always keep a simple black maxi dress and then a fun patterned or floral one in the wardrobe, too. The Bay is awesome for a wide variety, I like their Free People dresses for something more fun.
I often get asked what I wear for the rare date nights that Jason and I get! It depends on where we’re going, but if it’s a dinner date, I’ll keep it simple with some skinny jeans, a nice black top and some heels. I invested in these Citizens of Humanity Rocket Hi-Rise Skinny and they’re a long-time favourite. Jason is a pretty simple guy and likes when I keep it natural, especially when it’s our chance to catch up and reconnect outside of the house.
